Odin
is spectacularly and uniquely situated in the centre of the World Heritage
Site, The Heart of Neolithic Orkney, between the Lochs of Stenness and
Harray, at the south end of the Brodgar Bridge.
The Standing Stones of Stenness stand in the adjacent field and
the Barnhouse Neolithic Village is opposite the back door!

The
house is named after the Odin Stone which stood nearby until 1814 when
it was destroyed by the tenant farmer who was annoyed by the many visitors
who came to see it and take the ancient "Oath of Odin". |

The
Standing Stones, Barnhouse Neolithic Village and the Watchstone surround
the house. Maeshowe, the Ring of Brodgar and the recent very exciting
excavation at the Ness of Brodgar are within a few minutes walk. All
date from about 3000BC.

The
house was built in 1936 by a Captain Cooper, a retired master mariner,
who wanted to see water from each room in the house.
It was constructed using wood from the Cunard liner RMS
Mauretania. Some of the original fittings are still in
evidence in the kitchen, hallway and a wooden seat in the front porch.
